Summary of this article

  • EPF members can withdraw up to 75 per cent after 12 months.

  • Education allows 10 withdrawals; marriage and housing allow five.

  • Medical advances have no limit; special cases allow two annually.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has issued a guide explaining the frequency limits for advances from the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF). The guidelines cover withdrawals for essential needs, housing-related expenses and special circumstances.

According to the guide shared by EPFO on their official X account, eligible members can withdraw up to 75 per cent of their EPF balance, including the employee’s and employer’s contributions with interest, after completing 12 months of EPF membership.

EPF Withdrawal Rules For Essential Needs

EPFO has specified different frequency limits for advances taken for medical treatment, education and marriage.

For illness, members can apply for an advance for themselves or their family members without a specified limit on the number of withdrawals.

For education, EPF members can withdraw an advance up to 10 times during their membership. This covers education expenses for the member and their family.

For marriage, members can seek advances up to five times during their EPF membership. This provision applies to marriage-related expenses for themselves or their family members.

These limits indicate how often members can use the advance facility for the specified purposes during their membership.

Housing-Related EPF Advances

The EPFO guide groups housing-related needs into a separate category. Members can use EPF advances for the purchase of a flat, house or plot, construction of a house, repayment of a home loan, and renovation, alteration or improvement of a house.

For these housing-related purposes, the frequency limit is up to five advances during the member’s EPF membership.

Members planning to use their provident fund savings for housing expenses should check the applicable eligibility conditions and withdrawal limits before applying.

Special Circumstances And EPF Balance Limit

The third category covers special circumstances notified by the Central Board of the EPF. Under this category, members can withdraw an advance up to twice in a financial year.

The guide also outlines a uniform rule for advances across the specified categories. Members can withdraw up to 75 per cent of their EPF balance, comprising both the employee’s and employer’s contributions along with interest, after completing 12 months of membership.

However, the frequency limits differ according to the purpose of the advance. Medical needs have no specified frequency limit, while education, marriage, housing and special circumstances have their respective limits.
