For salaried employees, the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) is one of the key savings built up during their working years. But EPF subscribers do not have to wait until they change jobs or retire, to find out how much money has accumulated in their EPF account. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) allows members to check their balance and contribution history online through the EPF passbook.
The passbook gives members a record of transactions in their account. It includes the contributions made by the employee and the employer, the pension contributions and interest credited to the EPF account. Those who have worked with more than one employer can also find separate Member IDs linked to their Universal Account Number (UAN).
Employees with basic pay and dearness allowance (DA) of up to Rs 15,000 per month are covered under the mandatory contribution framework. Employees earning more than that can choose to make more contributions through the Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF).
For FY 2025-26, the government approved a deposit rate of 8.25 per cent on EPF deposits. According to a PTI report, the interest was credited to members’ accounts on July 15, 2026. The 8.25 per cent interest rate has been retained for the third consecutive year.
How To Check EPF Balance And Download Passbook
Members can check their EPF balance by accessing their passbook through the EPFO member portal.
After logging into the EPFO member portal with their UAN and password, members need to select the 'View' option from the top bar, and click on 'Passbook' in the drop-down menu.
The member will be redirected to the EPFO passbook portal. After logging in with the UAN and password, the member can select the relevant Member ID to access the account details linked to a particular employer.
The passbook shows monthly entries along with the employee’s contribution, employer’s contribution, pension contributions, and the interest credited. It also provides details of the total balance accumulated in the account.
Members who have worked for several companies may find more than one Member ID. The relevant ID can be selected to view the contribution records for each employment separately.
The passbook can also be saved for future reference. Members can click on the ‘Download PDF’ option on the top right of the e-passbook page to download a copy.
EPF Balance Check Through Missed Call And SMS
Members who do not want to access the portal can use the EPFO's missed call service to check their PF balance, by giving a missed call to 9966044425 from their registered mobile number. The call will disconnect automatically and an SMS containing the balance details will be sent to the member.
The balance and last contribution can also be checked through SMS. Subscribers can send 'EPFOHO <12-digit UAN>' to 7738299899 from their registered mobile number.
Members with newly activated UANs may not be able to access their passbook immediately. Passbook becomes available after a few hours once the UAN is activated.
