Taxpayers are entering the Income Tax Return filing period for the current assessment year, with compliance and documentation linked to TDS credits coming into focus as filing activity gains momentum. At the same time, attention is on key updates from the Income Tax Department related to return filing processes and verification of tax records.
TRACES-verified TDS Certificates Only Valid for ITR Filing
The Income Tax Department tweeted that Form 16 and Form 16A generated and downloaded through the TRACES portal alone constitute valid and authentic TDS certificates. It further advised, “taxpayers to ensure that the TDS certificates used for filing Income Tax Returns are obtained only from the official TRACES system.”
The department reiterated that only TDS certificates downloaded from the TRACES portal are considered verifiable for Income Tax Return filing. The portal also assigns a unique TDS certificate number (often referred to as a Unique ID) to each certificate for authentication and tracking purposes.
