1633 Buldhana police face tax notice over ITRs.
Bogus deductions allegedly filed through joint effort.
Officers asked to re-file correct returns by deadline.
In the Buldhana district of Maharashtra, over 1,600 police personnel have come under the radar of the Income Tax Department for filing wrong income tax returns (ITRs). According to officials, notices have been issued by the Income Tax Department to all these personnel, asking them to file correct and true returns on or before November 10, 2025.
The development came following a letter from Assistant Income Tax Commissioner (Investigation), Nagpur, dated October 23, 2025. The letter said that certain irregularities were found in the ITRs filed by a policeman named Vishnu Mule serving in the district during an income tax survey. During the investigation, it was discovered that Mule had helped several of his colleagues to file their ITRs.
The investigation reportedly found that false deductions were claimed in many of these filings. The letter said that several police personnel had filed false or improper returns, allegedly in association with certain chartered accountants. The officials believe this might have been done to reduce taxable income and claim higher refunds, according to a report in PTI.
Following this, the Assistant Income Tax Commissioner's office provided a list containing 1,633 names of suspected police personnel who filed improper tax returns. However, some of these names have repeated entries because the discrepancies pertain to different financial years corresponding to 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025.
The superintendent of police, Buldhana, took urgent note of the matter. On November 6, a wireless message was circulated among police personnel, instructing them to revise and re-file their returns and avoid attracting penalties or litigation. The office of the SP confirmed that all affected personnel were instructed to fully cooperate with the tax authorities.
An official said the police department is taking the matter seriously and will act as per the directions of the Income Tax Department. The re-filing process is currently underway, and those who fail to comply within the given deadline may face further scrutiny.
