Many states face three-day bank holiday weekend.
August 2025 will witness an extended holiday period for banks in most of the country, as Independence Day and Janmashtami fall on consecutive days. Customers who plan to visit their bank branches during this period may need to schedule their visits accordingly.
Nationwide Holiday on August 15
Friday, August 15, 2025, is a national bank holiday on the occasion of Independence Day. It is a public holiday in every state and union territory. August 15 will also be a festival day in some states as Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, and Parsi New Year (Shahenshahi) are on the same date. As all these festivals coincide with each other, most banks will remain shut for the entire day.
Janmashtami Festival on August 16
On the next day, Saturday, August 16, 2025, banks will be closed in several states on the festival of Janmashtami or Krishna Jayanthi. The states include Gujarat, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Telangana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, and Andhra Pradesh. As Janmashtami is being celebrated on different dates across different states, some have already celebrated the day on August 15 and others will celebrate it on August 16.
Three Consecutive Holidays in Certain Places
For most of the states, the two successive holidays will be followed by the standard weekly bank holiday on Sunday, August 17, 2025. This will create a three-day window with no in-branch banking facilities in the areas. Online and mobile banking will remain available, but services such as cash deposits, branch withdrawals, cheque clearings, and document delivery will be affected.
Customers are requested to prepare beforehand and clear any urgent banking transactions before Friday, August 15. This particularly applies to those who have time-bound matters to transact, such as loan applications, cheque deposits, or large cash withdrawals.
Even though digital banking services will function as usual, the processing of some services could be impacted by the longer absence of in-branch activities. Preplanning beforehand will help individuals and businesses to manage their financial activities in an effective manner during the holiday weekend.
