Bank branches in parts of India are closed today, August 26, for Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, which marks the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has listed August 26 as a bank holiday at specified centres under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
The holiday applies to public and private sector bank branches in the locations covered by the RBI calendar. It is not a nationwide bank holiday, so branches in other centres are scheduled to operate as usual.
Where Are Banks Closed Today
The August 26 bank holiday covers Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Delhi, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.
The RBI holiday calendar lists Mumbai, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chennai, Dehradun, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Lucknow, New Delhi, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada among the centres where bank branches are closed today.
At the same time, August 26 is not listed as a holiday for centres including Ahmedabad, Agartala, Aizawl, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Gangtok, Guwahati, Itanagar, Jaipur, Kohima, Kolkata, Panaji, Shillong and Shimla.
This means customers in these locations can visit their bank branches as per the normal schedule. Customers in areas observing the holiday need to wait until the branch reopens for services that require a physical visit.
Will UPI And Online Banking Work
Digital banking services are available even when a bank branch is closed for the holiday. Customers can use Unified Payments Interface (UPI), mobile banking, internet banking and ATMs for routine transactions.
UPI and online banking can be used for making payments and transferring funds. However, the availability of particular services can differ between banks.
Services that require a branch visit, such as cash deposits or withdrawals at the counter, cheque-related work and passbook updates, are not available at branches closed today.
Customers with urgent banking needs can therefore use digital channels where the required service is supported by their bank.
Why Is Eid-e-Milad Observed
Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi marks the birth of Prophet Muhammad and is observed by Muslims in different parts of India and around the world. The occasion falls during Rabi al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
The date of Eid-e-Milad follows the Islamic lunar calendar, so its corresponding date in the Gregorian calendar changes each year. In India, the occasion is observed differently across regions, which is also reflected in the RBI's centre-wise bank holiday schedule.
