Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has reported a major security incident involving unauthorised withdrawal transactions on its platform. The development has led to a temporary suspension of deposits and withdrawals as the exchange is taking steps to address the incident. The exchange has estimated the total impact at $6.30 billion with approximately $3 billion in affected assets frozen on-chain so far.
What Happened In The Binance Security Incident?
According to Binance’s initial investigation, the incident may have involved a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. This allegedly allowed an attacker to gain access to a service container and submit unauthorised withdrawal transactions.
Binance said it had found no evidence of any wallet private-key leak. It also said the estimated total impact was around $6.30 billion and that approximately $3 billion in affected assets had been frozen on-chain with the help of Blockchain partners.
“The estimated total impact sits at $6.3B,” Binance said in its official announcement on October 30, 2026.
What Steps Has Binance Taken Following The Incident?
As an immediate precaution, Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while security checks were completed. The exchange also revoked the affected address authorisation and engaged law enforcement and Blockchain intelligence partners to trace and recover the affected assets.
Binance said its teams were working with law enforcement to establish the identity of those responsible for the incident. It also plans to publish an updated Proof of Reserves once the remediation process is complete.
“Binance will cover all losses from the SAFU fund and the company’s funds. User funds are safe,” the exchange said.
Yi He, co-CEO of Binance, said; “User funds are safe. Binance will cover all hacking losses. Deposits and withdrawals are temporarily suspended while our team conducts security checks, freezes funds, and works with law enforcement. We will share a full post-mortem once the investigation is complete. Please rely only on official Binance channels for updates.”
Former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, “User funds are safe! It does look like a hack on Binance. Appreciate the quick freeze from Tether and Circle.”
He added, “I don’t manage Binance.com anymore, but as a shareholder, I expect all user funds will be fully covered.”
How Did Other Crypto Platforms Respond To The Binance Security Incident?
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said in a post on X: “Tether froze more than 1.567B USDT related to a potential Binance exchange hack. Protecting the industry and our partners is our main priority.”
Circle also reported freezing assets linked to the incident. CEO Jeremy Allaire said in a post on X that the company was tracking reports of a potential exploit involving Binance. “In coordination with law enforcement, we have frozen more than 800M USDC associated with the incident,” he said, adding that Circle would continue supporting the investigation.
Crypto exchange Coinbase also said that it offered support in blocking transactions to compromised wallets. CEO Brian Armstrong said in a post on X, “Our team is doing everything we can to support in the current situation, including blocking sends to compromised wallets.” He added that Coinbase had reached out to Binance to offer assistance.
Blockchain analytics platform Arkham Intelligence also shared an update in a post on X. It said the Binance hacker had become an official entity on its platform, with 70 associated addresses verified by its team.
