Summary of this article
OneTag lets FASTag users switch issuer banks without new tags.
Existing Tag ID and vehicle number stay unchanged after portability.
Rajmargyatra app will handle eligibility, verification and bank selection.
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has launched OneTag, a portability facility for NETC FASTag users, at the Global Fintech Fest 2026. The facility allows customers to change the bank that issues and manages their FASTag without getting a new physical tag.
Currently, customers seeking to change their issuer bank have to close their existing FASTag and complete a fresh onboarding process. This also requires a new physical tag. OneTag allows customers to select a different issuer bank while using the FASTag already attached to their vehicle.
OneTag is a joint initiative of Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), a company promoted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
Rajmargyatra App To Handle The Process
The portability service will be available through NHAI’s Rajmargyatra mobile app. The process will include an eligibility check, secure verification, customer consent and selection of the preferred issuer bank.
After successful portability, the existing FASTag’s Tag ID and vehicle registration number will stay unchanged. The selected issuer bank will complete the new onboarding process and provide FASTag-related services.
The previous issuer bank will handle verification and matters linked to the earlier FASTag wallet. These include refunds, pending transactions and other related issues.
NPCI To Update Issuer Details
NPCI will provide the central technology framework for OneTag and facilitate portability within the NETC system. It will also update the issuer details associated with the FASTag.
Toll acquirers and toll plazas will process transactions through the existing NETC framework. The portability process therefore, involves a change in the issuer bank without requiring changes to the physical tag or its vehicle-linked details.
13 Crore FASTags Issued Across India
More than 13 crore NETC FASTags have been issued across India, according to the information released with the launch. Around 6 crore tags are active, while FASTag penetration is above 98 per cent.
The new process also reduces the need for fresh tag production when customers switch issuer banks. This removes the production, dispatch and reissuance steps associated with obtaining another physical FASTag.
The facility places the issuer-bank change within the existing NETC framework. Customers can therefore move to another issuer while the existing Tag ID and vehicle registration number remain associated with the physical FASTag.
