Income tax refunds delayed for many taxpayers
Enhanced scrutiny and verification causing delays
Bank issues and past dues also impact refunds
Many taxpayers in India who are awaiting their income tax refund are confused about why it is taking so much time this year. For many awaiting the refund, it is not just a routine transaction but an important component of personal cash flows. However, for the assessment year (AY) 2025-26, a large number of people are still waiting for their returns months after filing their Income Tax Returns (ITRs). While the delays are a matter of concern, it is not out of legal understanding. Right now, the case is still within the legal process, and the delays do not indicate errors or lapses.
As per official data, over 8.82 crore ITRs have been filed for the AY 2025-26, out of which 8.69 crore applications were verified and 8/17 crore have been processed. Despite this huge processing rate, lakhs of taxpayers are still awaiting their refunds.
The key reason behind these delays is the increased rate of scrutiny. High-value refund claims are subject to a deeper round of checks and validations. The Income Tax Department has also intensified the data matching scenario with documents such as the Annual Information Statement and Form 26AS.
Causes Of Refund Delay
Most of the time, the Income Tax Department releases refunds in a timely manner, within 4-5 weeks of filing the ITR. This year, though, there has been a significant delay in some cases due to a number of factors.
1] Enhanced Verification
The tax department has intensified the data verification processes this year. Returns that claimed unusually high refunds, or instances of data mismatch between ITR and Form 26AS or inconsistent deduction claims are being flagged for a manual review. These checks are aimed at reducing incorrect refund claims.
2] Bank Account Discrepancies
Refunds cannot be credited to the taxpayer’s bank account if it is not pre-validated on the e-filing portal. Incorrect IFSC codes, closed bank accounts or a mismatch in details filled by the taxpayer also lead to delays.
3] Previous Notices
Any pending dues from the previous years can also be claimed against the present one. Similarly, if the previous ones are flagged for scrutiny or assessment, the present refund will also be delayed.
How To Check Refund Status
Taxpayers can check the refunds through the following steps.
Before filing any grievances, check the status of the refund on the Income Tax e-filing portal in the “View Filed Returns” section under the Income Tax Returns section. If the status shows “Processed with Refund Due”, the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) has already approved the refund, but it hasn’t been transferred to the taxpayer’s account yet. If it reflects “Refund Failed”, the transfer was attempted, but it failed. Similarly, if the status shows “Refund Paid”, it implies the Income Tax Department has already paid you.
