If one is planning bank visits to fulfil their pending banking work or initiate a process, it is advisable to check the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar before they plan their visit. Apart from regular weekend closures, banks across India are expected to remain shut and unoperational on account of festivals and regional observances such as Independence Day, Janmashtami, Onam, Raksha Bandhan, Nuakhai, and Chehlum. Since many of these holidays are state-specific celebrations, bank closures on their account vary across the country. Customers should note that while physical branches may be closed, digital banking services such as UPI, mobile banking, internet banking, and ATMs will continue to function as usual.
Complete list of bank holidays in August 2026
In lieu of several holidays being observed throughout August, here’s a list of the holidays for which the banks will remain closed.
August 4th, 2026 (Tuesday): Banks will remain closed on this day in Jammu and Kashmir in observance of Chehlum.
August 8th, 2026 (Saturday): This is the first weekend closure in August, which is observed on the second Saturday, followed by the regular holiday on August 9th, 2026. This will be observed across all states in India.
August 13th, 2026 (Thursday): This day is seen as Patriots’ Day in Manipur, for which the banks will remain closed.
August 15th, 2026 (Saturday): August 15th marks Independence Day in India. So, the banks nationwide will remain closed in lieu of the national holiday.
August 19th, 2026 (Wednesday): Banks in states like Gujarat, Odisha, Punjab, and Uttarakhand are expected to remain closed for Janmashtami.
August 22nd, 2026 (Saturday): This is the fourth Saturday holiday; hence, the bank will remain closed. Followed by a Sunday falling on August 23rd, 2026.
August 25th, 2026 (Tuesday): Banks in Odisha will remain closed on account of Nuakhai, which is one of the state's major harvest festivals.
August 26th, 2026 (Wednesday): Banks in Kerala will remain closed for Onam, while some states may observe Milad-un-Nabi, which can result in regional bank holidays.
August 28th, 2026 (Friday): Banks will remain shut in states like Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh, which are expected to remain closed for Rakhi. Prathir Shashthi is also observed on the same date, which is also dependent on respective state holidays.
The month of August also concludes on a weekly holiday on August 30th, 2026, on a Sunday.
Will online banking services be available?
Banks remaining shut for the above-notified holidays does not mean all financial activities will cease; only activities that require bank visits or require the bank’s clearance would be unavailable. Customers can continue to access essential banking services like UPI, internet banking, mobile banking, and ATM withdrawals, as they will continue to function normally. Activities like cheque clearances, demand draft issuance, locker operations, KYC updates, and other account-related documentation will not be available on these dates. If one has to visit the bank for the above-mentioned tasks, they must plan their visit cautiously and on dates when the bank is operational.
