India Post has introduced new rules that allow customers to claim a refund of postage charges if they cancel a postal booking under specified conditions. The changes were notified on July 16, 2026 and apply to bookings made online as well as at post office counters.
Refund Available on Cancelled Bookings
Under the new rules, customers who book postal articles through the India Post website or mobile application can cancel the booking and claim a refund before the article is accepted by the post office.
For bookings made at a post office counter, the sender can request cancellation on the same day the article was booked. A post office can also cancel a booking on the same day if it finds that incorrect information was entered during the booking process.
The notification states that refunds of postage will be allowed in accordance with administrative instructions issued by the Department of Posts from time to time.
Refund Covers Other Postal Charges
The new rules also provide for refunds of other charges in certain situations. Apart from postage, customers may also receive refunds of special fees and air surcharges if postal services are suspended. These refunds will also be governed by administrative instructions issued by the Department of Posts.
The notification does not change the conditions under which postal services may be suspended. It only specifies that eligible charges can be refunded when such situations arise.
New Options for International Postal Items
The rules also introduce more flexibility for international postal items.
A sender of an accountable outward international postal item can now request that the item be recalled from the office where it was booked, subject to the applicable administrative instructions.
For accountable inward international postal items, the addressee can request that the item be redirected from the office of delivery by paying the prescribed postal fee. However, if the new address falls within the delivery area of the same post office, no additional fee will be charged.
The notification also allows senders to request the recall or redirection of international postal items that are already in a foreign country. Such requests will depend on the policies of the postal administration in the destination country and the administrative instructions that are in force at that time.
The revised rules include provisions relating to refunds, cancellation of bookings, and the recall or redirection of postal items. The availability of these facilities will, however, continue to be subject to the conditions and administrative instructions issued by the Department of Posts.
