Summary of this article
Update an existing PAN instead of applying anew
Replace the photograph and signature after turning 18
Apply through Protean or the UTIITSL PAN portal
Minors who have turned 18 and held a Minor Permanent Account Number (PAN) can update their information as adults instead of issuing a new one entirely. The process involves updating the existing PAN record rather than just applying for a new PAN number. One can update their photograph, signature and other personal details.
What Is a Minor PAN Card?
A minor PAN card is issued to individuals who are under the age of 18 years and are engaged in financial and tax-related purposes. Since minors cannot function independently and complete certain formalities, a parent or guardian handles the application process. However, the photograph and signature associated with a PAN may no longer reflect the individual’s current valid identity once they become adults. Updating these details can help ensure that the PAN card reflects their current appearance and signature. According to the Income Tax Department’s authorised PAN service providers, individuals can request changes to their existing PAN details through the correction process.
What Details Should Be Updated?
Once an individual turns 18, they should review their existing PAN card and update the details that need changes. Changes like photograph, signature, personal details, address and contact details need to be updated. Not every detail needs to be changed simply because the PAN holder has turned 18; applicants should select the relevant changes that are based on their existing PAN records.
How to Update a Minor PAN Card
Applicants, minor PAN card holders and even guardians can request a PAN correction in such cases through either of the two service providers: Protean eGov Technologies or the UTIITSL PAN Portal.
Visit the Official PAN Portal
Visit the official sites like Protean eGov Technologies or the UTIITSL PAN Portal. Select the option for changes or corrections to the existing PAN data.
Enter PAN Details
Select the appropriate application type and enter your existing PAN number. Ensure that your details match the applicable identity documents.
New Photograph and Signature
Follow the portal’s instructions for submitting the updated photograph and signature. Make sure that the photograph is recent, clear, and compliant with the specified requirements.
Submit Documents
For the changes that are requested, submit the relevant supporting documents. Aadhaar details may also be required, which is subject to the applicable rules and exemptions.
Once the application is complete, pay the applicable fee through the official portal, where a fee is applicable.
Instead of surrendering one's present PAN card and issuing a new one altogether, one can easily update their present one with new details.
