The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) kept the interest rate at 8.25 per cent for the financial year 2024-25. The EPFO’s Central Board of Trustees (CBT) recommended this rate to the Finance Ministry in February 2025. On May 26, 2025, the rates were approved. The Ministry of Labour and Employment issued a notification regarding it and approved the rate at 8.25 per cent. According to media reports, the EPFO has started crediting interest rates to bank accounts of EPF members. However, no official SMS or email has been sent to the members regarding this. Note that even if the interest is credited now or in the next month, there will be no loss of interest.

Historically, EPFO had notified the interest for a financial year between July and October of the next year. For example, EPFO notified the interest rates for FY2020-21 on October 30, 2021, for FY2021-22 on June 3, 2022, and for FY2022-23 on July 24, 2023. Interest is credited only after the rates are notified. For FY204-25, interest rate of 8.25 per cent has been notified on May 26, so the interest can be expected early in the accounts.

Currently, there are around 8 crore EPF subscribers, who are waiting for interest credit. But, if there is no SMS or email, how would one know about it? There are different ways to check EPF balance and passbook.

How To Check EPF Balance?

One can check the EPF passbook online through its official portal or UMANG app and balance through SMS or a missed call in the absence of the internet.

EPFO Portal

A subscriber needs to visit the official portal of EPFO for members (subscribers). Input UAN ID, password, and captcha code. On the next page, click the ‘Passbook’ option, check the details, or download it for future reference.

One can also go directly to the passbook portal of the EPFO. Then login, click the ‘Passbook’ tab, and get the details.

UMANG App

Open Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance ‘UMANG’ mobile app. Log in with a registered mobile number and MPIN or log in with OTP. Then, write ‘EPFO’ in the search bar. On the next screen click on ‘view passbook’ to check balance and interest details.

However, if one doesn’t have internet or if the portal or app is not opening, which is very common with the EPFO portal, one can check the balance through a missed call or an SMS.

Missed Call

Give a missed call to #9966044425 from your registered mobile number. An SMS is sent to the registered mobile number within a few minutes containing details of the EPF balance and the last transaction. However, the prerequisite is that the subscriber’s UAN should be activated and integrated with Know Your Customer (KYC) details and the mobile number linked to it.

Short Message Service (SMS)

A subscriber can also send an SMS to “EPFOHO UAN” to #7738299899 from the registered mobile number. Just like the previous option of a missed call, under this option also, an SMS is sent to the registered mobile number with the EPF balance and last PF contribution details.

EPF is an exempt-exempt-exempt (EEE) instrument in which interest is tax-free on the employee’s contribution of up to Rs 2.5 lakh in a year.
