Summary of this article
October 21 passed without a DA hike announcement for employees.
Central government employees await the next Cabinet meeting on October 28.
July 2026 DA revision rates remain unconfirmed by the Centre.
Central government employees and pensioners are still waiting for the Centre to announce the next dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) hike. The Cabinet meeting held on October 21 passed without an announcement on the July 2026 revision.
The next Cabinet meeting, expected on October 28, is now on the calendar as employees await an official decision. The government has not confirmed when the revised rates will be announced or when the increase will take effect.
October 28 Cabinet Meeting In Focus
The Centre revises DA for serving employees and DR for pensioners twice a year, covering the January and July cycles. The latest revision under consideration is for July 2026.
The previous increase was announced on April 18, 2026. It raised the DA rate from 58 per cent to 60 per cent of basic pay, effective from January 1, 2026. Pensioners received a corresponding revision in DR.
The October 21 meeting did not bring an update on the July cycle. While October 28 is the next expected Cabinet meeting date, the Centre has not confirmed that the DA proposal will be taken up or approved on that day.
July DA Calculation Uses Industrial Worker Inflation Data
The DA calculation is linked to the All-India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW). This index tracks changes in prices paid by industrial workers and is used to work out the allowance rate.
The 12-month index data required for the July 2026 calculation is now available. However, the final DA and DR rates will be known only after the Centre announces its decision.
The current DA rate for Central government employees is 60 per cent of basic pay. The revised rate will determine how much extra employees receive in their monthly salaries. For pensioners, the DR rate impacts the relief paid against their eligible basic pension.
How A DA Increase Could Change Monthly Pay
The amount added to an employee’s salary depends on basic pay and the percentage-point increase in DA.
For someone drawing a basic salary of Rs 18,000, a 2 percentage-point increase would mean Rs 360 more in monthly DA. If the rate rises by 3 percentage points, the additional amount would be Rs 540 a month.
If an employee has a basic salary of Rs 29,200, a hike of 2 percentage points will increase the monthly DA by Rs 584. If it goes up by 3 percentage points, then the amount would be Rs 876 per month. These figures have been calculated using the basic salary and assumed increases. These are not the official numbers for the July 2026 revision.
