Summary of this article
Regional bank closures will affect select cities this week.
September 26 is a nationwide fourth Saturday bank holiday.
UPI, ATMs and online banking can handle routine transactions.
Planning to visit your bank branch this week? Check the holiday schedule first. Banks will have regional closures between September 21 and September 27, along with the nationwide closure on the fourth Saturday.
The holidays will not apply to every branch across the country. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) follows a location-based holiday calendar, so customers in different cities can have different working days.
Branches of banks such as State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Punjab National Bank (PNB) will be closed in cities where these holidays apply.
Bank Holidays This Week
The key bank holidays between September 21 and September 27 are:
September 21: Bank branches in Bhubaneswar and Thiruvananthapuram will be closed for Janmotsav of Srimanta Sankardeva and Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi.
September 22: Banks in Ranchi will observe a holiday for Karma Puja.
September 23: Bank branches in Jammu and Srinagar will be closed on account of the birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji.
September 25: Banks in Gangtok will be closed for Indrajatra.
September 26: Bank branches across the country will be closed as it is the fourth Saturday.
September 24 and September 27 are not listed as bank holidays in the RBI's schedule for this week.
Fourth Saturday Means Nationwide Closure
The fourth Saturday is a regular bank holiday across India. Banks do not open their branches on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month.
This makes September 26 different from the other dates on the list, which are linked to regional holidays. Customers who need to meet bank officials, submit documents or handle other branch-based work should plan around this closure.
Online Banking And ATMs Will Be Available
A branch holiday does not shut down all banking channels. Customers can use Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for digital payments and fund transfers. Internet and mobile banking can also be used for many routine transactions.
ATMs can be used for cash withdrawals and other services supported by individual machines.
The Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system operated by the RBI is available round the clock throughout the year, including bank holidays. Customers can therefore make eligible electronic fund transfers even when branches are closed.
Check Before You Visit The Branch
Customers should check the holiday applicable to their city before making a branch visit. A holiday listed for one location does not automatically apply to branches in another city.
Those who need to submit physical documents, complete in-person verification or access services that require bank staff may have to visit on the next working day.
