Equity benchmark indices started the week on August 11 with strong gains after closing in the negative for six continuous weeks. Today's surge amid broad-based buying helped in erasing much of the losses from the previous session on August 8.

Key Market Cues To Watch Tomorrow, August 12

India CPI Inflation

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation will release July retail inflation data on August 12. Inflation is already at a six-year low, and investors will watch if the easing trend continues or reverses ahead of the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) October policy meeting. In August, the RBI held the repo rate at 5.5 per cent with a ‘neutral’ stance.

US Core Inflation

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics will release July core CPI inflation data on August 12. Core CPI rose 0.2 per cent in June and 2.9 per cent year-on-year. Economists expect a 0.3 per cent rise in July, according to a Bloomberg survey. A softer reading could increase pressure on the Federal Reserve from US President Donald Trump to cut rates. The Fed last kept its benchmark rate at 4.25–4.5 per cent in July.

US–China Trade Talks Deadline

The 90-day pause on tariffs between the US and China is set to end on August 12. Both sides have been in talks to extend the truce. It is anticipated that a favourable deal could lift Chinese markets and prompt foreign investors to shift some funds from India to China.
