 ·       UIDAI and Department of School Education work together to update Aadhaar data of students

·       17 crore Aadhaar numbers require biometric updates as per MeitY

·       Students' data will now be integrated into the UDISE+ platform

There are around 17 crore Aadhaar numbers in which biometric update is pending, according to the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MEITy) statement on August 27, 2025. To address this issue, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and the Department of School Education and Literacy have joined hands. Under the arrangement, students’ Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) status of their Aadhaar will be provided on the education department’s Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) application.

In this regard, UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar has written a letter to the chief secretaries of States and Union territories (UTs) asking them to provide support in organising or arranging MBU camps for students to update their biometric details in Aadhaar.

Kumar has written in the latter, “It was thought that a camp approach through the schools could help in completing the pending MBUs. The main question was how the schools would know which students have not done the biometric updates. The technology teams of UIDAI and the Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of India, have worked together to successfully implement a solution through the UDISE+ application. Now all the schools can be aware of the pending MBUs.”

UDISE+ is the information management system of the education department, which contains information about school education. It is a unified portal for collecting, managing, and analysing school education data from all states and union territories across the country.

Why Is Updating Aadhaar Important?

Aadhaar is used at many places, ranging from authenticating details to getting subsidies in government schemes. As it is an important identity proof, it needs to be updated every 10 years. It is crucial to maintain the accuracy of the biometric details of children in Aadhaar. However, in the case of children, it should be updated when they turn five years old and 15 years old. While the government advises timely updation of Aadhaar details for children, people usually ignore it due to no immediate impending harm and go for children’s Aadhaar updation at the last moment to avail benefits under different schemes. It can lead to stress and nervousness among students, especially while registering for competitive exams like NEET, JEE, CUET, etc., and sometimes may also result in losing the subsidy or other benefits.

Now, with better outreach and a targeted approach, it can be avoided.
