The Assam government has resumed monthly payments under its Orunodoi welfare scheme. As a part of the scheme 3.71 million women are set to receive Rs 1,250 in their bank accounts through Aadhaar-linked Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT).
The payments under the scheme were restarted from August 1. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma mentioned the same in a post on social media platform X (formerly twitter). The Orunodoi scheme, introduced in 2020, provides monthly financial assistance to eligible low-income households, with women serving as the primary beneficiaries.
The DBT system transfers the assistance directly into beneficiaries' bank accounts. The state government has also announced the deployment of Orunodoi Sahayaks to assist beneficiaries facing issues related to documentation, Aadhaar seeding and other formalities linked to the scheme.
Rs 2,500 Payment For Four Flood-Affected Districts
While the scheme mandates a DBT of Rs 1,250 per month for eligible beneficiaries, women in four flood-stricken districts will receive Rs 2,500 for August, twice the regular monthly assistance.
The higher payment will be made to eligible beneficiaries in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat. The increased amount is being given as the state remains impacted by floods. The money is meant to provide financial support to affected households amid the calamity.
Student Schemes To Cover More Than 5 Lakh
The state government has also announced the next steps for its Nijut Moina and Nijut Babu schemes. These schemes provide financial assistance to students pursuing higher education.
Application forms for the two schemes will be distributed from the first week of August. Sarm mentioned in his post on X that the government plans to provide more than Rs 300 crore in financial assistance to over five lakh students in October.
Nijut Moina is aimed at supporting girl students in higher education. The scheme provides financial assistance based on the level of study and is intended to encourage girls to continue their education after school.
Similar to Nijut Moina, the Nijut Babu scheme provides financial assistance to eligible male students from economically weaker families. The scheme is intended to provide support to boys pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
Subsidised Ration Scheme To Resume On August 10
Assam's subsidised ration scheme is scheduled to restart on August 10, with more than 70 lakh beneficiaries set to receive food supplies under the programme.
Beneficiaries will receive free ration along with 1 kg of masur dal and 1 kg of sugar for Rs 100 per ration card.
Sarma has also stated that the administration has been asked to address issues faced by beneficiaries and ensure that eligible people can access the benefits under the programmes.
The measures announced for August cover monthly cash assistance under Orunodoi, higher payments for flood-affected beneficiaries, financial support for students and subsidised food supplies.
